The new Opti-O-3 blood spot biomarker test from Igennus takes clinical nutrition to the next level through facilitating an evidence-based treatment approach and personalised nutrition for patients.

The Opti-O-3 blood spot test includes a fatty acid profile and measures clinically validated biomarkers including the omega-3 index, the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio and the most sensitive inflammatory biomarker, the AA to EPA ratio.

The Opti-O-3 is the first and only fatty acid test to identify a patient’s specific omega-3 dose required to bring their biomarkers into healthy target ranges. Equipped with a personalised dose recommendations from the Opti-O-3 test report, individuals can be confident they are taking the appropriate dose for their individual needs. This provides a highly targeted treatment approach for superior results with any omega-3 supplement regime. The Opti-O-3 test is especially useful for understanding the nutritional needs of individuals with complex and multiple symptoms – especially so for chronic ilnesses.

Evidence-based biomarkers for inflammation management in chronic disease

Higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids are consistently associated with a lower risk for the development of both physical and psychological disorders. The key inflammatory biomarkers measured in the Opti-O-3 test are scientifically established markers of long-term health.

Omega-3 index

Omega-6 to

omega-3 ratio

AA to EPA ratio

  • an early cardiovascular risk indicator
  • low omega-3 index associated with mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders
  • high omega-3 index associated with reduced risk of sudden death, lower CVD risk, decreased inflammation & oxidative stress, reduced risk of depression & dementia
  • an established marker of long-term health
  • high omega-6 & low omega-3 linked with chronic illness including CVD, dementia, neurodevelopmental disorders and inflammatory conditions
  • the most accurate marker of inflammatory status & disease risk
  • measures eicosanoid balance between those that drive immune & inflammatory processes from AA and those from EPA that resolve inflammation

What omega-3 dose?

Whilst supplementing with omega-3 should result in an increase within cell membranes, omega-3 requirements are unique to each individual and are influenced by a number of factors, including diet and lifestyle. There is considerable variation in dose response, with body weight being the strongest influencer.[1]

Although data from clinical studies is a useful starting point for any nutritional intervention, ideal dosages are an approximation and each person will have a slightly different dose requirement for combating a deficiency or support for a specific condition.

Omega-3 has long been used in clinical nutrition and now it’s possible with the Opti-O-3 to personalise your omega-3 daily dose. The final Opti-O-3 report includes a fatty acid profile, key biomarkers and individual dose requirement to achieve:

  • An omega-3 index of more than 8%
  • An omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of between 3 and 4
  • An AA to EPA ratio of between 1.5 and 3

An initial test provides a baseline to monitor response to fatty acid supplementation; we recommend a second test after six months to ensure levels are back on track or normal.

Convenient & straightforward test method

Using a convenient finger-prick blood spot test, the Opti-O-3 is non-invasive and suitable for use at home, without requiring a GP visit. The test report includes a full interpretation with recommendations, so it’s a straightforward test for practitioners to use with clients, with access to technical support from our in-house nutrition scientists. For private individuals, we offer a complimentary 20-minute consultation to discuss test results and recommendations.

Dr Nina Bailey, Head of Clinical Nutrition at Igennus, comments: “There is enormous potential for developing increasingly personalised treatment programmes with clients if we combine evidence and expertise from diagnostic testing with data from large-scale clinical studies and align these with appropriate nutraceutical products.

“Nutrition science is continually evolving, as is the science behind the biological biomarkers; while the omega-3 index and omega-6 to omega-3 ratio are useful measures, they are slightly crude. A far more accurate and sensitive indicator is the AA to EPA ratio, as this highlights whether the eicosanoid products derived from these specific fats are balanced.

“When it comes to supplementation, it is challenging to understand the right dosage for each individual client. In launching the Opti-O-3 test we aim to help tailor nutrition recommendations to manage these biomarkers, with application across a range of conditions, from inflammatory diseases to cognitive function and mental health and even chronic fatigue syndrome. Armed with their biomarker test results and personalised dosages, practitioners’ clients and private individuals are in a better position to manage key symptoms and support their health long-term.”

Together with Igennus’ range of 70-90% active concentration pure EPA omega-3 supplements, Igennus offers comprehensive clinical protocols for conditions with an inflammatory basis, including mood & mental health, cardiovascular health, neurodevelopmental disorders and CFS/ME.
