Collection: Omega-3
Popular for: general health, cardiovascular health, the immune system, inflammatory ailments, cognitive function, infant brain development, mood regulation, vision, joint and bone structure and skin health.
Omega-3 fatty acids are a form of polyunsaturated fat with many roles in the body and a wide range of documented benefits, thanks to decades of scientific research into this foundational nutrient. The strongest evidence points to the role of omega-3s in brain development and function, heart health and vision. In practice, omega-3s are being researched and used in clinical practice in many more areas of health, with tremendous results.
Omega-3s are found in a wide range of foods, though the types and form of omega-3 can broadly be divided into those from plant sources (eggs, pastured dairy, nuts, seeds, etc) and those from marine life – particularly oily fish, seafood, crustaceans and some algae. It is primarily those omega-3s from marine life that offer the most significant benefits to health, since these sources contain the two most important omega-3 fats – EPA and DHA. Human physiology does have the ability to convert omega-3s found in plant sources to EPA and DHA but, in reality, this pathway is very inefficient and is not an effective way to maintain optimal levels in the diet.
EPA and DHA play key roles in the regulation of cardiovascular, immune and inflammatory processes, as well as a vital role in brain structure and function, with depleted levels of omega-3 fats linked to numerous health conditions. So important are our levels of EPA and DHA, that their levels in our cells are even considered a vital health biomarker - the Omega-3 index - linked to long-term disease risk and cardiovascular health.
Whilst we wholeheartedly recommend consuming EPA & DHA from oily fish to boost omega-3 levels, concerns over contaminants and heavy metals like mercury limit intake to twice weekly. Purified omega-3 supplements enable us to achieve higher dietary intakes conveniently and safely – as may be required for those requiring more intensive support.
Igennus omega-3 supplements contain ultra-pure wild fish oil with 80-90% EPA and DHA concentrations, using the superior rTG form of omega-3 offering high bioavailability, potency and exceptional purity. We offer a balanced omega-3-6-9 alternative for vegans (Echiomega), which is pro-EPA, and has a favourable omega-6 to omega-3 ratio.
