Standard absorption of vitamin B12 via the gut relies on several factors that can easily be compromised, and is limited to small quantities of B12 at any one time. Absorption is usually reliant on adequate stomach acid to detach B12 from proteins in the diet, and the presence of intrinsic factor (IF) - a binding protein which supports absorption in the intestines.
