Curcumin vs other curcuminoids
Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine since 1900 BC for its wide-reaching health and wellbeing benefits. The curcuminoids are a group of active compounds in turmeric and include:
· curcumin (75%)
· demethoxycurcumin (DMC)(15%) and
· bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC) (10%)
Of these three, it is curcumin which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral and antifungal properties. Our Longvida® Optimised Curcumin delivers high concentrations of curcumin in comparison to some other products which may deliver mainly DMC or BDMC.
Longvida® Optimised Curcumin and the brain
Free curcumin can cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike its breakdown products and other curcuminoids. As it stays in the body for long periods in the active, free form, Longvida® is the only curcumin to cross the blood-brain barrier, with the potential for beneficial action in the brain.
Optimised bioavailability
Curcumin naturally has extremely poor bioavailability, meaning that very little gets absorbed into the blood, but passes through the gut unchanged. Most curcumin that is absorbed is broken down very quickly by gut enzymes and the liver. The half life of standard turmeric (the time taken to halve its concentration in the body) is less than 1 minute!
Curcumin’s breakdown products, THC and HHC, are much less beneficial than active, free form curcumin. They are water-soluble and leave the body rapidly, in urine. Free form curcumin is fat-soluble, so stays in the body for longer.
The protective nature of the Longvida® solid lipid curcumin particle (SLCP) system enables curcumin to be absorbed from the gut directly into the lymphatic system rather than the bloodstream. It is delivered from the lymph into the bloodstream after bypassing the liver. This means that active, free form curcumin can reach the body’s cells without being broken down by liver enzymes.
Longvida® vs other curcumin products
Longvida® lipid technology overcomes poor curcumin absorption, efficiently delivering free curcumin, so powerful it delivers therapeutic blood levels with much smaller doses than other forms of curcumin, boasting an incredible half-life of over 7 hours.
Piperine (black pepper extract) improves absorption of curcuminoids without significant impact on how long they stay active in the body. The half-life of piperine curcumin is 6.6 minutes vs Longvida® Optimised Curcumin’s half-life of 7.5 hours! In addition, piperine works to suppress the breakdown of curcumin in the liver by blocking a detoxification pathway. Taking piperine long-term could lead to a build up of toxins, drugs and excess hormones in the body.
Meriva curcumin is well absorbed but not high in free, active curcumin. It is also broken down rapidly in the liver and is quickly flushed out of the body.
Novasol and CurcuWIN have good bioavailability, but lack clinical trial evidence.
285x GREATER BIOAVAILABILITY - as standard curcumin is very poorly absorbed, Longvida provides a fatty coating around the curcumin, to enhance absorption
HIGH DOSE IN FREE FORM - longvida provides free form curcumin which is directly transported into the lymphatic system, ensuring clinically beneficial levels in the body
LONG LASTING - free form cucumin has a significantly higher half life, so it is retained in the body for 7x longer than standard curcumin
UNIQUE BRAIN SUPPORT - longvida curcumin is the only form of curcumin proven to cross into the brain & it also exerts its antioxidant effects on joints
NO BLACK PEPPER EXTRACT - we have formulated this product without black pepper extract due to its negative effects of suppressing liver detoxification function

Pharmaceutical-grade UK manufactured food supplements
Why supplement?
Are supplements essential? No, not if you eat seasonal, local and fresh organic food, your sleep is regularly deep and refreshing and you experience little or no stress. These are the foundations of great health. Should diet provide most of your nutrition? Absolutely. Do bioavailable nutrition supplements play a role in filling in the gaps? We believe so – but only if you’re taking the right forms of active ingredients, otherwise your body will excrete much of it (best case scenario) or your body may even accumulate unmetabolized nutrients and you’ll disrupt homeostasis – you don’t want this. When it comes to supplements and dosing, it’s quality over quantity – and always check with a qualified professional if you have any questions. Igennus nutritionists are available for any questions about our products.

'Free' form curcumin
Bioavailable & long lasting
Standard curcumin (turmeric) is very poorly absorbed, at less than 1%. Absorption is diminished throughout the digestive process, including being degraded by stomach acid. As a result, the half-life of standard curcumin (the time taken to halve its concentration in the body) is less than 1 minute! Piperine (black pepper extract) can extend its half-life to 6 minutes, however it has negative effects of suppressing liver detoxification function. In contrast, Longvida delivers curcumin with a 7-hour half life, and has shown to offer 285x greater bioavailability.
